Introducing Low Carbon Fuels into Micro Gas Turbine Systems for Transmission to Net Zero

Introducing Low Carbon Fuels into Micro Gas Turbine Systems for Transmission to Net Zero

Abstract:
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) projections of the ۲ Degree Scenario, global decarbonisation of the power generation sector can be achieved by increasing the shares of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), and by efficiency improvements and fuel switching to low/zero carbon fuels. The design and application of free-carbon emission renewable fuels in micro heat and power (Micro-CHP) generators will provide decentralised, clean, affordable, and resilient energy thereby reaching the ۲۰۵۰ net-zero carbon emission objectives. In this webinar implementing alternative low carbon and renewable fuels (e.g., Biogas, Syngas, H۲) in micro gas turbine (MGT) systems with less than ۱۰۰ KWe power will be discussed, and some current case studies will be presented. The combustor design strategy, CFD modelling and optimisations and fabrication and testing of the MGT systems will also be presented. Micro-CHP units with a core of MGTs can improve the combined efficiency of heat and power generation up to ۲۰% at an affordable price for domestic applications. When combined with low/zero carbon fuels this can be the future carbon-neutral technology to support the society achieving the ambitious energy and climate targets. Biogas is considered a carbon-neutral fuel, syngas generated from coal/biomass gasification will have benefits of precombustion carbon capture, and H۲ is a fuel with a high heating value and no CO۲ emission. The development of the low/zero carbon gas turbines would enable deep emissions reduction for the long-term while integrating more renewables.
