Welcome to the Aerospace Department of the School of Mechanical Engineering, IUST.

This department is one of the most equipped aerospace engineering departments in I. R. Iran, which annually hosts several students in doctoral and master’s degrees. At present, this department includes 8 main faculty members and 9 adjunct faculty members from the other departments of the school of mechanical Engineering, and also 7 PhD students and 86 M. Sc. students are currently studying in this department, and almost 260 M. Sc. students have graduated from this department. The activities of the faculty members of this department cover various fields, including educational activities and guiding dissertations, conducting research projects, industrial consulting, and conducting industrial projects.

This department includes 6 research laboratories in different areas. The main educational and research fields in this department include the propulsion, aerodynamics, and aerospace structures. The results of the researches in the department of aerospace engineering are continuously presented as patents in national and international forums, publication of scientific books and articles in journals, as well as the industrial projects performed to solve the industrial problems.

Research Fields

Propulsion

This branch of aerospace engineering deals with the power or thrust generation systems to move in or out of the atmosphere and includes all systems that have been developed to generate the required force for considered missions. These propulsion systems can be categorized by different viewpoints and, for example, according to the energy source, are divided into chemical and non-chemical propulsion systems, each of which is also divided into several types. For example, in the chemical propulsion systems, depending on how the required oxygen is supplied, the air-breathing and non-air-breathing propulsion systems have been developed. In this branch of aerospace engineering, various sciences such as combustion, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and … are used for analysis, design, and performance prediction of the propulsion systems, and they are also the main basis of the educational contents.

Aerodynamics

This branch of aerospace engineering deals with the structure of the flow field around an object to calculate the forces and moments that produced by the air stream around the flying body. The different flow regimes are divided into subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic flows based on the Mach number of the main stream, which determines the physics of the flow field and also the methods to study it in each regime. Issues related to an unsteady aerodynamics, which are very important in some practical applications, are also studied in this branch of aerospace engineering. Various sciences such as fluid dynamics, turbulent flows, and computational fluid dynamics have been used for analysis, design, and prediction of flow fields, and they are also the main basis of the educational contents in this branch.
