Welcome to the Manufacturing Engineering department’s webpage.
Manufacturing Engineering plays an important role in technological developments of many fields. A manufacturing engineer is capable of converting row materials in the plain shape to a novel product having added-values through the most optimal and economical solutions. To achieve this goal, expertise and experiences in various paradigms such as material sciences, mechanics, electronics, and industrial engineering are required. Moreover, a manufacturing engineer should be familiar with all the common processes used in parts making, assembly, and production. This department was established with the goal of educating junior engineers who are interested in learning the fundamentals of manufacturing. The educated junior engineers are potentially capable of developing effective solutions for conceptual design, reverse engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance and assessment of various advanced parts and assembly products. The graduated engineers will either be recruited in the design and manufacturing departments of active industrial corporations, or convert their innovative ideas to a breakthrough product through a startup company.
The Manufacturing Engineering department of IUST is among the most active, well-equipped, and pioneers of the field across the country, which is constantly admitting graduate candidates in each year. The department is comprised of a total of 14 faculties, out of which 10 are main members and 4 are associated. There are 15 PhD and more than 90 Msc students pursuing a graduate degree. While some of these students are self-funded, the majority of them are state-funded or holding a scholarship from domestic or foreign organizations. The department is highly active in admitting international students. As a matter of fact, the department is pleased that it has successfully conducted the first full English Msc program of the university in Mechatronics Engineering.
The department has 5 educational and 5 research labs as well as 2 educational workshops equipped with standard facilities for Manufacturing Engineering hands-on experiences. The research interests of the faculty members include (but are not limited to) new technologies in metal forming, machining of metallic and non-metallic materials, novel materials, mechatronics, artificial intelligence, measurements, and instrumentation.
The department has recently launched “The Center for Manufacturing Technologies”, which is home to talented students and researchers who are seeking state-of-the-art manufacturing solutions. The results of the cutting-edge research projects of the department are constantly published in the form of scientific books, or papers in prestigious journals and conferences. Some of the technological achievements have been patented in national and international forums. With an aim to improve the quality of life for public in accordance to the mission set by the governments, the department is constantly contributing to the technical developments in industry and society.
Dr. Majid Rajabi
Head of the Manufacturing Engineering Department
Metal forming is closely related to material sciences, in that a good understanding of physical, metallurgical, and mechanical properties of metals would lead to more advanced formation methods. Given the recent advancements in composite materials, there are promising opportunities to develop novel forming processes by studying the behavior of these materials in simulation and through experimental tests. Accordingly, active research projects are currently conducted in the department on understanding novel materials, composites, nanocomposite, and layered materials, as well as new technologies related to forming bulk materials and metal rolls, and advanced coatings.
Traditional and novel machining techniques has long been an active research field in the Manufacturing Engineering department. Here, the main research topics include improving the performance in
traditional machining (turning, milling, and grinding), developing non-traditional machining using, e.g., ultrasound, laser ray and electron rays, and finally, machining of new materials such as composites and super-alloys.
Emerging processing techniques such as novel jointing and assembly methods, welding processes (laser and electron rays, ultrasonic, etc), advanced additive manufacturing of plastic and metallic parts, non-destructive testing, monitoring and control of CNC machines, CAD/CAM, reverse engineering, and quality control are amongst the topics actively researched in various labs of the department.
Mechatronics has emerged at the intersection of new technologies in Mechanics, Electronics, and Computer Sciences; an attractive field of study chosen by many engineers and researchers during last decades which has led to astonishing breakthroughs in leading industries. The design, manufacturing, analysis, and control of mechatronic systems such as different types of robots (ranging from micro to industrial ones), automation, artificial intelligence, machine vision, hydraulics, and pneumatics are amongst the research topics of the department.
